Le Mont Dore is located at the foot of the Massif Du Sancy which, at 1886 m (6188 ft), is the highest point in the Massif Central and the source of the Dordogne River. Descried in the Rough Guide “an altogether wholesome and civilized sort of place", Le Mont Dore is a spa town and a centre for winter and summer sports. The thermal spa was originally established in Roman times and was subsequently developed in the 18th and 19th centuries (please see health and beauty). A funicular railway was erected during the belle epoch when Le Mont Dore was very fashionable with the rich and famous – Balzac, George Sand Anatole France, Sarah Bernhardt, the Countess of Flanders and the Crown Princess of Romania. It later became one of the first ski resorts in France, the cable car dating back to 1936, and is one of the few winter sports centres with a railway station. Le Mont Dore and the surrounding area offer great summer and winter activities for all ages (please see activities) and the town itself boats a Famille Plus label. Other facilities
